Birthing Kits To India

Every 90 seconds, a woman dies of complications related to pregnancy and childbirth. The United Nations (WHO) estimated in 1996 that 585,000 women died annually in childbirth. Developing countries accounted for 99% of these deaths. For every woman who dies in childbirth, another 30 women incur injuries and infections - many of which are often painful, disabling, embarrassing and lifelong.

Over sixty million women give birth each year with either the assistance of a Traditional Birth Attendant ( a relative, neighbor or village health worker) or no assistance at all. Many women and babies die from infections acquired during unclean childbirth. India has a maternal mortality rate of 540:100,000 live births. 117,000 women die annually from childbirth related causes which is the highest number of any country. Needless to say, there is a great need for clean and adequate birthing kits.

In our work together in India we are doing more and more medical clinics in the remote and primitive areas of Northeast India. In my most recent trip I conducted three medical clinics among the very poor and primitive Chakma Indians. Mortality rates are very high among the women who give birth. In these primitive regions there are no hospitals, clinics, doctors, nurses or midwives. Most women we assist for reasons of isolation, cultural choice or poor transport have little or no assistance during childbirth. Many mothers and babies die from preventable infections. By providing a clean birthing kit and training in how to use it, these mothers will have the resources to reduce infection and live productive lives as mothers of live birth children.

Our love, compassion and actions of good will continue to open doors and bring many souls to Jesus Christ. The medical clinics, along with the Bible studies and preaching of the Gospel, is doubly good news. First and foremost is always the Good News of Jesus Christ, but second and because of the Good News and example of compassion of Jesus Christ, we bring the good news of wellness, health care and medical treatment.

WHAT IS A BIRTH KIT

A Birthing Kit works by providing the 8 cleans for a clean birth: The Eight Cleans are:

  1. 1. Clean birth site - preventing delivery onto the floor
  2. 2. Clean hands - to prevent the birth attendant transmitting germs to mother and baby
  3. 3. Clean ties - to prevent bleeding from the umbilical cord for mother and baby.
  4. 4. Clean sharp instrument - to reduce infection caused by other implements
  5. 5. Clean gauze - to wipe away birth canal secretions from the eyes, which decreases future eye infections and to cover umbilical cord for cleanliness
  6. 6. Clean umbilical cord - washing and drying the stump prevents infection
  7. 7. Clean perineum - cleaning and care of the birth mother to prevent infection.
  8. 8. Clean blanket and birth cap - to retain body heat

TO ACCOMPLISH THE EIGHT CLEANS WE WILL PROVIDE THE FOLLOWING ITEMS:

IMPORTANT NOTES

  1. - All Items must be new.
  2. - All emergency kits are carefully planned to make them usable in the greatest number of situations. Since strict rules often govern product entry into international countries, it is important that kits contain only the requested items - nothing more.
  3. - DO NOT include any personal notes, money or added materials. It is okay and suggested that you place a note in each kit designated the name of the group assembling the kits. Give Christ the glory!
